If you are reading today’s article, chances are, you are one of my executive advisory clients. Or perhaps I’ve worked with your team or keynoted at your industry event. If so, you’ve seen that my focus on Slow Down to Speed Up® encourages a rigorous focus on thoughtful communication. Especially in difficult times, as both the pace and complexity of business accelerate.
In the midst of today’s COVID-19 crisis, consider this a quick cheat-sheet, a reminder to take a strategic pause and inquire of your employees, customers, and business partners:
1.How are you doing?
How are you faring, professionally and personally? How is your family holding up? Is everyone ok? (Be thoughtful, of course, not to intrude on those who prefer to keep personal life separate and private).
What’s going well, even in the face of today’s circumstances? As we progress, how can we sustain and build upon the good?
What are your greatest challenges today? Which obstacles are cropping up that you hadn’t anticipated or aren’t equipped to manage? And then…
2. How can I help?
What do you need from me today—whether more, less, or different from what you needed before the crisis?
Which resources are essential right now, and are you getting what you need?
How can I knock down barriers for you? What will clear the path toward getting the right things done?
These conversations can be held in multiple ways:
Arrange 1:1 calls or video chats. Prioritize these discussions. They don’t need to be lengthy but they must be consistent. Don’t cancel unless absolutely necessary.
Pull your team(s) together, albeit remotely, to share and discuss new information and explore ways to help one another succeed.
Show up. In video messages, written updates, and specified “office hours” to ensure smooth flow of information and provide reasonable accessibility to your employees, customers, and business partners.
In the coming weeks, I will continue to offer you advice that will help you survive, and even thrive, in these unprecedented times. Please email me with additional topics you’d like me to address. Call anytime you need me. I’d love to hear from you.
To your continued health, wellness, and steadfast leadership.
